The Sketch

I confess that I am inspired by Madge Gill (1882-1961), who did hundreds of ink drawings of faces on small cards during her life time. This face and the one before, Circus Day, were both inspired by her style as I see it.
The eyes of most of her faces are much farther apart than realistic and she always had the hair or head attire covering their forehead. Those were the two things that struck me.
Madge Gill faces had no shading as she only used ink but they all had such obvious personality.

Progress on the "sweet spot".

Stay tuned and
Thanks You.

  3. Good morning, What a wonderful artist, Madge Gill, I wonder if she would of loved the internet and blogging? I bet there are many sketches and books of work that are not even seen. Very remarkable work. When one views her work you can feel the ispiration tugging at your mind.

I also was impressed by your working of color in the patchwork fashion, very pleasing, very clean, sharp yet blended application.

I thought of you several times as the radio is carrying announcements of the circus in the Twin Cities and tickets available.

If the three day weekend went as fast for you as for me it just flew by.

Wishing you an artful week, plus many thank yous.

  4. Beautiful work - I'm really drawn to the eyes in the second rendering where paint has been added to the face - the eyes are hooded and mysterious.
